This is a truly beautiful fish, with a fiery red body and vivid blue markings. The coral hind, or vermillion rock cod (Cephalopholis miniata), is sometimes known as coral rock cod. Occasionally, you can find adults in small groups, usually at a depth of 20 cm, but they can occasionally reach deeper.

It is a coral grouper that is popular and beautiful. Those who go snorkelling and diving frequently come across it along the upper slopes of the reef. This fish is known locally as kovelifaana. 

Young fish are spotless. They remain near the corals and have a basslet appearance. The adults can be found by their many blue spots on an orange-red background. It is a bright orange colour, and most of its body is covered with small blue spots. This fish can grow up to 40 cm long. This fish is within the Serranidae family. This species can be found in clear water at depths ranging from 2 to 150 meters on well-developed exposed coral reefs.  The fish feeds on schooling fish and benthic invertebrates.

These fish, called groupers, hunt alone and generally at dusk near the bottom.

They have a powerful tongue, which makes it easier for them to consume food. Their tongues are strong, which helps them consume food. Typically, they open their mouths and consume their prey completely.
