The one and only Maldivian sunset

Maldives sunsets are quite stunning. This natural phenomenon is unique to the Maldives due to geographical factors. Known as the equator, an imaginary line extends from the center of our planet. This line is also used to describe other celestial bodies and space objects such as the sun, moon, planets, and stars. This line is located at 0 degrees latitude on Earth, midway between the north and south poles. Half of the globe is north and half is south, separated by the equator.

Day and darkness are brought on by the earth’s rotation toward and away from the sun. Countries located on the equator often have one full day of sunlight and one full night of darkness. At the equator, the Earth’s diameter is wider. The bulge of the earth is biggest at this point because the Maldives are close to the equator. It is also close to the sun, and the sunlight strikes at a perpendicular angle.

I captured a view through the leaves of a screwpine tree.

Apart from the unique biodiversity and distinct underwater beauty of the Maldives, the sunset is another natural wonder that soothes the hearts of international travelers, fishermen, seafarers, and the people of the beautiful islands.

Sunset is a natural occurrence that calms and fills the hearts and minds of humans. My island, Fuvahmulah, which is located near the equator, has unique geographical features. I had the pleasure to witness and feel this wonder many times. But one day it was so special. It was four years ago that I was able to capture some vivid pictures of this natural phenomenon. I was able to capture the breathtaking beauty of light, atmosphere, and nature above me and the horizon. The patterns and the intricate and complex optical marvel obscured me from every angle. I was walking along the road that leads to Neregando Beach, guarded by tall coconut trees. We call it ruibaal.

An array of colors painted the sky as the sun began its descent. The tall coconut palm trees stood by me, filtering the vivid blues to warm oranges, pinks, and purples. That was surreal. This occurrence did not take much time to start. I was excited to witness the vibrant colors that had set over the horizon. The colors evoked feelings of serenity and tranquility in me.

It started with a soft, golden hue that bathed everything in a warm, gentle light. I walked inside the ruibaal and took pictures from my phone. As the sunset was starting, the sun was going down slowly, changing its color from creamy yellow to shades of glowing orange. The rays were not reaching the shoreline anymore. Some parts of the shoreline were getting dark as though the sun was going down.

The sky finally became cooler as the sun went down, with the colors fading into the night’s rich blues and purples. The clouds held the last traces of light, a poignant memory of the breathtaking scenery that had just been experienced. A reminder of the fundamental simplicity of nature, it was a time of absolute calm. It was truly a marvel of nature. Nothing in our world compares to the beauty of this natural phenomenon.
